Groundwork II reviews the fundamentals of Upside-Down Pilates and focuses on shoulder mobility and stability as well as ankle, hip, and knee alignment, while increasing strength and flexibility throughout the body during Groundwork based exercises. Groundwork is based on Joseph Pilates original mat exercises. Mr Pilates created this exercise sequence to rid himself of asthma and strengthen his sickly body. He taught his regime to other soldiers in an internment camp he was in during WWI. The soldiers who practiced his regime remained healthy as an influenza epidemic swept through the camp and took many lives. Because of this and his success in rehabbing amputee patients during WWI he was asked to train the German National Army later called the Nazi Army. He refused and moved to the United States. In the US he started training dancers and gymnasts and created many more pieces of equipment.
