Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation Arc Barrel III challenges strength and flexibility along with introducing coordination through PNF Arc Barrel based exercises. Must be attending class 2-3 days per week to participate. What is Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation Pilates? The originator of the Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation techniques (PNF) was Dr. Herman Kabat, M.D., Ph.D., beginning in the 1940’s in the United States. Dr. Kabat was a physician and a neurophysiologist. He began his exploration in working with polio patience. Up until this point therapy had focused on one joint one motion techniques. Dr Kabat’s techniques are multi diminutional and multi muscular. What is PNF- “…methods of promoting or hastening the response of the neuromuscular mechanism through stimulation of our proprioceptors.” (Voss, p. xvii) Basically PNF patterns take our muscles in a three diminutional pattern from a complete stretch to a full contraction activating our stretch reflex through the Golgi tendon apparatus and spindle receptors to trick our muscles into working properly. What is a the Golgi Tendon Apparatus? Organ in Musculotendonous Junction that when stimulated or strongly contracted forces the muscle to turn off or relax. What are the spindle receptors? Organs in muscle that when stretch, force the muscle to activate. What is the stretch reflex? When you stretch a muscle it causes the muscle to contract, and when you contract a muscle it causes it to relax creating a balance of usage. Lisa Orig learned the PNF patters from Irene Dowd. Ms Dowd uses the patterns to create sequences to train and rehab dancers. Lisa created PNF Pilates for post rehab conditioning and athletic training.
