Groundwork is based on Joseph Pilates original mat exercises. Mr Pilates created this exercise sequence to rid himself of asthma and strengthen his sickly body. He taught his regime to other soldiers in an internment camp he was in during WWI. The soldiers who practiced his regime remained healthy as an influenza epidemic swept through the camp and took many lives. Because of this and his success in rehabbing amputee patients during WWI he was asked to train the German National Army later called the Nazi Army. He refused and moved to the United States. In the US he started training dancers and gymnasts and created many more pieces of equipment.This Groundwork class will teach the fundamentals of Upside-Down Pilates. We will explore the useof breath, spinal articulation, pelvic and shoulder stability and mobility, head and cervical spinealignment, as well as focus and control through groundwork based exercises.
